News 2006 Race Report Ray wards off the competition Kinghorn abandoned all thoughts about the World Cup last Friday as a record number of athletes descended on the village to take part in the annual Black Rock ‘5’ beach and road race. A record field of 677 headed out across the sand towards the volcanic outcrop with no real breaks being made due to the stiff headwind. However, on reaching the Rock, eventual winner Ray Ward made his effort as others struggled through the icy-cold water and, despite a persistent challenge from runner-up Stevie Cairns, the Aberdour resident maintained his hard-fought advantage all the way to the steep uphill finish. Only individual success belonged to the infamous Hunters Bog Trotters this year as they relinquished their team title to first-time winners Corstorphine. The women’s event was won in spectacular fashion by petite Rosie Smith of Edinburgh University Hare & Hounds who, for a while, threatened Anne Buckley’s long-standing course record. Smith’s fine effort was instrumental in securing the team prize for her fellow students. Special
mention must be made of the winning performance in the men’s vet-60
category in which Pitreavie’s Archibald Duncan, a part-time resident
of Kinghorn, recorded a time of 27.27, some 35 seconds faster than that
of the vet-50 victor.
