Near perfect running conditions met the 1190 participants on the start line of the 37th Annual Black Rock Race in Kinghorn on Friday evening.

It was a case of so near and yet so far for Central AC’s Aidan Thomson, who despite a supreme effort up the final hill to the finish line missed the race record by a narrow four seconds finishing in 21.56, well clear of Dundee Hawkhill’s Ryan Donald in 22.12.    2025 champion, Thomas Hilton (still a junior!) of Moorfoot Runners was narrowly first out to the Black Rock on Pettycur sands, earning him the Bill Tulloch Award for first male to the rock.    But he was passed by Thomson and Donald on the return leg.   Central AC’s Morag Millar defended her crown in 26.16 and was also the recipient of the Brian McMorrin Award for first lady to the rock.  Morag was well clear of Fife AC’s Stephie Pennycook in 27.18 and Central AC team mate Jennifer Wetton in 27.40.

Early finishers reported that although the water behind the Rock was low the sand underfoot was very wet and rippled making progress wearing for the bulk of the field.

The Brian Hughes Awards for first junior male and female were awarded to Central AC’s Kaydan Day and Lucie Gibson of Falkirk Victoria Harriers, respectively.

The male team contest was decided by a narrow four point margin in favour of Corstorphine AAC from Fife AC.  Fife AC were the clear victors in the ladies’ team contest by a 200 point margin.

The prizegiving took place at the Harbour View, with prizes presented by long-serving Race Director John McKay who was completing his 35th year in the role.   John thanked race sponsors The Harbour View and the team at the venue for their hard work on the evening.  John also thanked longstanding sponsors Williams Bros Brewery, Scotia FM, Crexcell Ltd, Myrtle Coffee and Briggs Marine for their support.

He extended his appreciation for the support given on the evening from Burntisland First Aid Services Trust, Kinghorn Community Centre, Kinghorn Coastguard, Kinghorn Scouts and Langtoun Explorers.

Finally, he offered his heartfelt thanks to the community of Kinghorn for their support for all the runners taking part and to the huge team of volunteer marshals and event staff who willingly give their time, without whom the event wouldn’t be possible.
